Abstract
Activity of SiO 2 in SiO 2- Al 2O 3-CaO slag was measured in low SiO 2 level in order to provide a thermodynamic basis for the reaction between metal and slag. The activity of SiO 2 was measured by equilibrating C-saturated Fe-Si-melts and slags in a 1 atm CO gas atmosphere at 1,600°C. This was carried out by melting an Fe-C-Si alloy and SiO 2- Al 2O 3-CaO slag in a C crucible under a CO atmosphere. Weighted reagents were carefully mixed and placed in the C crucible. Mixed powder in the C crucible was heated above the melting temperature to induce convection current. After four hours, it was heated to 1,700°C and held for five minutes to increase the viscosity of the fluid to get an easy to pour out of the crucible. Fe-C-1%Si is prescribed close to the equilibrium composition with the slag to reach equilibrium in a short time.
