Abstract
The idea that Feynman's backflow effects and spin-dependent correlations are very similar is investigated. To answer this question we have studied a small system of 3He atoms using the variational Monte Carlo method. We used trial functions of the Jastrow-Slater form modified by backflow correlations and a symmetrized product wave function that includes spin-spin correlations. The implications of our results for atomic and molecular physics and nuclear physics are mentioned.
