The overarching goal of the proposed research is to articulate the role of water in determining patterns in terrestrial food webs. Water (precipitation) limits primary production of terrestrial plants at a global scale, but this observation is rarely applied to higher trophic levels. Water limitation occurs regularly in arid, semi-arid, Mediterranean and other dry biomes (> 1/3 of Earths land mass) and during droughts in all terrestrial biomes. Drought severity and the variability of extreme hydrologic events are also predicted to increase with climate change. Thus, the proposed research promises to speak to a more general theory of terrestrial ecologyone that mechanistically embraces ongoing climate and hydrologic change._u_{|
